Council approve rejected plans

PLANS to build 64 new homes in Cambourne have come under fire.

Parish councillors had rejected plans to build the new homes in Great Cambourne.

But on Wednesday, South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) gave the new development planning permission.

Originally the homes were due to be built in Upper Cambourne but a change of mind by the developers will now mean the homes are built in Great Cambourne.

The developers, including Bovis Homes, Bryant Homes and George Wimpey, have now agreed to build a permanent youth centre at an earlier date than expected - in return for the council allowing the move of the units to Great Cambourne.

Parish councillors passed a resolution at their meeting on Tuesday rejecting the move from Upper Cambourne to Great Cambourne.

John Vickery, chairman of Cambourne Parish Council, said parish councillors raised concern over the "inappropriate" move because they thought enough additional houses had been built in Great Cambourne.

He said: "Councillors passed a resolution saying plans for the extra 64 homes should be rejected because there have been too many increases in density to the Cambourne masterplan in Great Cambourne.

"But we are very supportive of the youth building. We have given money towards a temporary youth building."

A spokeswoman from SCDC said the decision to move the 64 units had been made purely on planning grounds.

A temporary youth building is expected to arrive in Back Lane, Cambourne, at the end of January.

It had previously been expected to be up and running by the end of November.
